I also don’t think the combination of hidden lore/story, next to zero guiding towards a critical path, and loads of metroidvania style backtracking is a very good mix, personally. It’s making these last couple of objectives feel like an awful chore, rather than an engaging challenge to me, in a way that is kinda souring me on the game. With Hollow Knight I’m getting better and I’m being challenged but for some reason the repeated failures are really nagging at me, moreso than they ever did in Celeste. Playing Celeste earlier in the year was a big deal to me and it made me finish a game that I never thought I was good enough to complete without getting frustrated at the game itself.
I’m knocking at the door of a 107% completion of the game and going up against the final fight, but for some reason I’m starting to really question how much fun I’m actually having with the game.
